Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury

A torn stabilising ligament inside the knee

What is it?

The ACL controls forward movement and rotation of the knee. It is commonly injured during sports that involve pivoting or sudden changes of direction.

Common signs

  • A 'pop' at the time of injury
  • Rapid swelling
  • The knee giving way
