Hip condition

Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)

An abnormal shape of the hip that causes pinching

What is it?

In FAI, extra bone on the ball or the rim of the socket causes them to rub during movement. This can damage the labrum and cartilage, particularly in younger, active people.

Common signs

  • Groin pain with deep bending or twisting
  • Pain when sitting for long periods
  • Reduced hip rotation

When to seek advice

If symptoms affect your sleep, work or daily activities, or have not improved with simple measures, an assessment can help clarify the cause and your options.

This page provides general information and is not a substitute for a consultation. Every patient is different; your options, risks and recovery will be discussed with you personally.
